Zika virus (ZIKV) was first identified in Brazil in 2015 by reverse-transcriptase–polymerase-chain-reaction (RT-PCR) assays of serum specimens from patients from the state of Bahia who presented with a denguelike illness that was characterized by rash, fever, myalgias, arthralgias, and conjunctivitis.
